Simple Words: The Black Guy Dies First: Black Horror Cinema From Fodder to Oscar

Make it stand out

Before you ask…DJ is fine.

On the other hand, Matt (me) read a book for a first time in a while and decided to share some thoughts.

In short, if you like horror, or the history of horror; read ‘The Black Guy Dies First: Black Horror Cinema From Fodder to Oscar.’

Up there with the likes of ‘The Monster Show’ by David J. Skal, ‘Men, Women, and Chainsaws’ by Carol J. Clover and the companion pieces ‘Horror Noire’ by Robin R. Means Coleman and it’s 2019 Shudder off-shoot, this breezy follow-up to ‘Horror Noire’ dives deeper into the complicated history of black horror from early day ‘spook’ archetypes to modern day representation of black LGBTQ+ in films like 2021’s ‘Candyman’ and 2022’s ‘Nope.’

In short, take a weekend, get your zombie on, and devour this book. And check out our review of ‘Horror Noire’ right HERE.
